Food Basket Basics: Using the Supermarket as a Nutrition Learning Tool

This webinar describes at least three sources of consumer confusion when selecting foods consistent with dietary recommendations; explores at least five common misconceptions regarding planning meals and selecting food to achieve health guidelines; discusses potential roles for health professionals to leverage the supermarket to provide science-based and practical messages regarding food choices; and identifies at least three strategies to use to encourage clients to make sustainable, healthful food choices.

Judith Dodd MS, RD, LDN, FADA

Judy Dodd is a registered dietitian, and assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh. Academically, her degrees are from Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh. Along with teaching at the university level, she is a consultant on child nutrition issues and Food and Nutrition Advisor to Giant Eagle, Inc. Active in her community and in her profession, she is a past president of the American Dietetic Association, a volunteer leader and spokesperson for the local affiliate of the American Heart Association.


Caroline Whitby, MS, RD, LDN

Caroline Whitby, MS, RD, LDN, is a licensed and registered dietitian with BS degrees in psychology and clinical dietetics and nutrition from the University of Pittsburgh and a masters degree in wellness and human performance. Caroline is the corporate dietitian and Manager of Dietitian Initiatives for Giant Eagle, Inc. Giant Eagle is a private owned regional supermarket with multiple banners and ~240 stores across PA, OH, MD, & WV. Caroline has been instrumental in growing the dietitian presence within the supermarket, and to date, has hired 20 in-store dietitians and one retail dietitian supervisor for the company. In her role, she provides supervision and guidance to ensure the team meets their retail expectations and they continue to grow and develop as registered dietitians. In addition to her supervisory responsibilities, she plays an integral role in developing Health and Wellness Strategy for the entire company. Caroline is an active contributor in the community providing educational presentations to community groups and serving as a mentor to dietetic interns.
